A Leftee's Golf Guide to the Ryder Cup


The 42nd Ryder Cup Matches is underway at Albatros Course of Le Golf National in Guyancourt (Paris suburb) and the Leftee Swing Lab wanted to give everyone a rundown of what you need to know! 

Ryder Cup Overview:

  • Started in 1927 by English Businessman Samuel Ryder
    • First Ryder Cup played at Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts 
    • Teams originally consisted of players from the United States vs players from Great Britain
      • Continental Europe was added in 1979
  • Played in even number years

Format

  • 12 players from the United States & Europe
  • 5 match play sessions over 3 days (28 total matches)
  • First 2 days (all players do not have to participate)
    • 1 four-match session of four-ball
      • 2v2 where each player plays their own ball
      • Best score on each side is recorded
    • 1 four-match session of foursomes
      • 2v2 where shots are alternating
      • One team members tee's off on odd holes and the other team member tee's off on even holes
  • Final Day (each team member must play)
    • 12 single matches

Scoring:

  • Each match is worth one point
  • Ties worth 1/2 point to each side
  • First team to reach 14.5 points wins
  • If match ends in 14-14 tie
    • Previous Ryder Cup winner keeps title (has not happened since 1989)

  • Record: 18-20-7
  • Playing Captain in 2016

  • 4th Ryder Cup appearance (2010, 2012, 2014)
